2026-09-18 Ultima IX – OpenGL Renderer

Apologies for the delays in news and patch work. The universe loves to throw other tasks and situations your way.

At present, there is a renewed focus to finalize the current set of fixes and prepare the map and script files for being released, which means removing one or two problematic fixes while ensuring other fixes are fully working.

In other news, theGreyWanderer has been developing an OpenGL renderer for Ultima IX using DLL injection to insert his own rendering code. This Renderer is replacing the Glide system previously used. In this image, you can see the rendering of Batista in Moonglow with his new OpenGL version.

The Forgotten World Team has spent many months of hours (over many years, especially 06-15) researching and breaking down the files and operations of the Ultima IX engine, so we are sharing our prior efforts and reversed-engineered knowledge with theGreyWanderer to help him in his efforts. FWTeam and theGreyWanderer are teaming up to pool resources, knowledge, and efforts to make Ultima IX a better Ultima.

By the way, at this point the Renderer is considered 100% functional – Full Glide Replacement. But he is not done yet. He has already been working on fixing some of the game’s crashes and bugs. In the image, he has been using his DLL to intercept operations by the Mage creature AI and make it work more regularly. In the image, Batista was attacked and immediately goes to teleport and does in fact teleport – out of her house beyond the walls.

Powerful mage to teleport through walls.

Really Big Welcome to theGreyWanderer!
